ANDREA STYLIANOU
IUEU Centre 2009 PhD Scholarship Holder at Macquarie University

PhD candidate, Department of International Studies, Macquarie University
M.A., Flinders University, South Australia
B.A. (Journalism/Communications), Deakin University, Victoria
B.Sc. (Pharmacology/Microbiology), The University of Adelaide, South Australia
While working in the Australian mass media as a daily newspaper reporter for about 10 years, Andrea covered a range of news and features articles for News Ltd. Andrea decided to undertake postgraduate study because she enjoys in-depth researching and detailed writing, and she felt that in today’s media world investigative journalism is virtually non-existent, especially in Australian journalism.
Andrea, an IUEU scholarship recipient, chose to study research topics associated with political science and international relations. These areas are associated with her knowledge and interest in Cyprus, which is both the country of her birth and where her family were made refugees in 1974.
Andrea’s PhD thesis is titled: An investigation into the Missing Persons of Cyprus and treatment of POWs from the Turkish invasion of 1974. It is a historical look at a very significant political issue in the modern history of the Republic of Cyprus – a Mediterranean island nation still divided after the Turkish invasion of a third of the country in 1974.
The thesis will aim to answer questions, that have not previously been publicly divulged or published, on the Missing Persons and POWs of Cyprus from the 1974 Turkish invasion. Research questions raised will investigate the following issues:
- With respect to the Missing Persons of Cyprus – is there any evidence of where individuals were last seen?
- Is there any particular town or village which had a significant number of Missing Persons, if so why?
- What reports have authorities issued relatives (next of kin)?
- What is being done about Missing Persons as part of any proposed peace plan?
Prior to her journalism career, Andrea worked as a research scientist investigating the genetic control of cancer cells and then in the area of public relations and marketing, specialising in science communications. Andrea also briefly worked at the UN Headquarters in New York, in the News and Media Division of the Department of Public Information, where she used this opportunity to research for her Master of Arts thesis, interviewing many diplomats attending the General Assembly.
Andrea is hoping to present her research findings at a range of international conferences and to publish extensively about this topic, which has been neglected for more than three decades.
