R. Mittal

PhD candidate, Centre for Research on Social Inclusion, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia Erasmus Mundus Masters in Journalism and Media within Globalisation: The European Perspective; University of Aarhus, Denmark, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, University of Hamburg, Germany B.Com, University of Mumbai, India

My academic and professional background is multidisciplinary – after a degree in commerce and economics, followed by a master’s diploma in mass communication – I worked for some of India’s prominent media houses and communication firms in an editorial capacity for three years. My last masters, supported by the European Union, had a strong research focus in the areas of globalisation and governance; cultural integration and citizenship; the public sphere and public discourse; media systems of the world and their social, institutional and professional dimensions.

I based my master’s thesis on climate change coverage in the Indian print media, hitherto unexplored, taking European and American climate studies as a reference point. The field of risk communication has provided me with new insights into the interaction between the decision makers of society, the media, and the public sphere. I would like to further explore this interaction in the area of cultural citizenship. The modes of inclusion and exclusion (by state or community) tend to revolve around cultural practices and an exploration of multiculturalism and cultural identities in Europe and Australia can be a way forward in understanding better the developing concept of global citizenship.
