DAMIR MITRIC

IUEU Centre 2009 PhD Scholarship Holder at la trobe University

Linda Silaghi

PhD Topic:
Being Tolerated: The Bosnian Refugee Experience in Germany

My name is Damir Mitric.  I am currently enrolled as a PhD student in the School of Historical and European Studies at La Trobe University, Melbourne.  In 2005 I graduated from La Trobe University with a Bachelor in Laws and Bachelor in Arts (History/German).  I completed one year of my degree in Germany at the Hamburg University for Economics and Politics, deferring my studies in 2004 for a semester in order to perform an internship in the German Parliament.

In 2006 I began writing my Honours thesis in history titled Sarajevans, Voices under Shellfire, where I explored the realities of everyday lives of ordinary citizens of Sarajevo during the infamous siege, which lasted from 1992 to 1996.

Consequently I was offered the La Trobe University Post Graduate Award Scholarship in 2007, which enabled me to pursue further studies, which I am now doing in association with the IUEU Centre.
My PhD thesis deals with the experiences of Bosnian refugees in Germany in the 1990s.  The main focus of my study is the Duldung (Toleration Permit).  This is a particular form of temporary protection, which was granted to the majority of Bosnian refugees, who found shelter in Germany.  Broadly speaking, the thesis looks at the effects of the Toleration Permit on the lives of the refugees, as well as the political motivations behind it.

My work relies heavily on oral interviews as a primary source, so in 2008 I enrolled as a postgraduate student in the School of Historical Studies at the University of Bonn, in order to conduct my interviews and collect further data, as well as present my research at the School’s Bi-annual Postgraduate Conference.

Since my return from Europe I have given a paper on Methodology in Oral History at the 2009 History Program Postgraduate Conference at La Trobe University.
