Kate Wheldrake
I am in my third year of a Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice and Bachelor of Arts double degree at Flinders University. In my Arts degree I am majoring in International Relations and Spanish. I’m a member of Amnesty International, was the secretary of the Amnesty club at Flinders University in 2006, and am now working in the Amnesty International office in Adelaide, on current campaigns.
I applied for the EU AU Global Citizenship program for a number of reasons. Firstly, I want to study overseas to gain a different perspective on issues I have studied in Australia. Studying International Migration and Ethnic Relations at Malmö University in Sweden will give me the opportunity to consider migration and ethnic relations from a European perspective. As it is such an emotive and important issue in Australia it will be fascinating to learn about a European view.
Another reason that I want to study overseas is to learn a new language, and learn more about other cultures and people. I studied French and Japanese at high school and am now studying Spanish, and I am looking forward to learning Swedish. I’m also looking forward to sharing aspects of Australia and Australian culture with people that I meet. Having been a member of the National Youth Roundtable in 2005-06, advising the Federal Government on youth issues, I will be able to share my experiences with fellow students. I hope that by studying in Malmö and Utrecht I will gain new skills, have many fascinating experiences and make many friends, and I’m grateful for this opportunity.
