Mr Bodo Richter, Programme Manager for Australia, Directorate General of Education and Culture (DG EAC) in the European Commission visited the IUEU Centre at
Macquarie University and presented a seminar on the EU and Exchange Studies on 9th April 2008.

As part of its activities to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, Murdoch University and the Innovative Universities European Union (IUEU) Centre presented a public lecture on Monday, December 10, 2007 by Dr. Kristina Spohr Readman, lecturer in international history at the London School of Economics.

Professor Brigid Laffan has recently undertaken a tour in Australia. Her visit to Australia was part of the IUEU Centre’s continuing program of events to mark the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome.

A group of five delegates from the International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER) School at Malmö University, Sweden, visited Macquarie University on Monday 15 October.

Sue Wright (University of Portsmouth) was an official IUEU guest, based at Macquarie University, from Monday 8 to Thursday 11 October. She held a seminar on Monday on "Citizenship tests in the UK.Why now, and for what purpose?".

Dr Bert Peeters, Senior Lecturer and Head of French Studies at Macquarie University, has joined the IUEU Centre as the Acting Co-Director of the Centre’s Macquarie hub.

Members of the Macquarie University Steering Group met on 25 July 2007 to discuss the Centre’s achievements to date and plans for the coming operational year.

Professor Christina Slade gave a keynote address on ‘Global citizenship, contrasting views’ to the ‘Images of Europe’ conference, held 1 - 3 June 2007 at the Academy of Sciences, Rue Ducale, Brussels.

HE the High Commissioner of Cyprus, Mr Achilleas Antoniades gave an address to the final class of “The European Union”, an undergraduate unit taught at all six IUEU Centre member universities.

Dr Jose Pablo Alzina, Cultural Attaché, Spanish Embassy gave a seminar about “The Citizenship Rights of Latin American Indians under Spanish Rule” on 28 May at Macquarie University.

Mr David White, Director of Lifelong Learning, Education and Training Policy at the Education and Culture Directorate General, European Commission, was a guest at Macquarie University on 14 May.

Professor Jan Zielonka, Professor of European Politics at the University of
Oxford, arrives in Australia on
29 April. He is being brought to Australia by the Vice Chancellor of La
Trobe University and his national tour has been organised to coincide with the
50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome.

His Excellency Mr Holger Standertskjold, Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Singapore, visited the IUEU Centre at Macquarie University on 16 April 2007.

Applications are now invited for Australian European University Institute Fellowships which provide the opportunity to carry out research at the European University Institute in Florence – the high profile research institute established by the Member States of the founding European Communities.

On Monday, 11 December 2006 the IUEU Centre rooms at Macquarie University (Room 323, Building W6A) were launched by the EU Ambassador to Australia His Excellency Mr Bruno Julien, at a function hosted by the Dean of Humanities, Professor Christina Slade.

Applications have been called for the 2006 European Studies Summer School, to be held in Canberra, 11–15 December 2006. Places for twenty-five students are available, targeted at final year undergraduates and honours-level students in any field or discipline, with selection based on merit.
