2007
Welcome, Hessel! Hessel from the University of Utrecht commenced his 10 week placements at Macquarie University on 24 September 2007.
Hi there, my name is Hessel van der Bij, I am an MA student in New Media and Digital Culture from Utrecht University, Holland. The IUEU Centre offered me the great opportunity to conduct my mandatory research for graduation. The next ten weeks I work on a project concerning a lot of my interests: technology, education and participatory culture. Its main focus lies within the inter-relationship between technology and higher education. How can we understand new media evolution in the light of higher education? Other academic interests are citizenship notions, gender issues, sports, fan culture and intellectual property. Of course all these inside a new media discourse. Next to my research I plan doing some sports, like soccer and surfing. I already noticed the Australians are really sports minded so I am looking forward to that! Email:hessel_bij@hotmail.com
2006
IUEU Centre interns, Jago van den Akker and Maud Raaphorst from the University of Utrecht, who commenced 10 week placements at Flinders and Macquarie Universities respectively on 25 September 2006.
My name is Maud Raaphorst and I am a 21-year old Dutch master student. I have a bachelors degree in Communication and Information Studies and I am currently doing the New Media and Digital Culture Master at the University of Utrecht. The research that I will be doing here at Maquarie University is my graduation project. Subjects that I have studied before are: computergames and the identity of player-characters, the representation of women in popular televisionshows, the evolution of art (from painting to computergames), sports and citizenship and many other new media related subjects. The research that I will be doing here is a great challenge and opportunity, not only because it is in another country, but also because it addresses video technologies and digital communication: subjects that have I have studied in both my bachelor’s and master’s courses. Jago van den Akker here. I'm a MA student in New Media & DIgital Culture at theUniversity of Utrecht, the Netherlands. I've flown all the way to Australia to work on the website of the Global Citizenship Project. Promoting exchange between the EU and Australia, the Global Citizenship Project allowsBA students to do a sponsored semester of study overseas. But who will go when nobody knows of it's existence - no one! So that's my main concern: getting all noses in the right direction, extract the right information from the right people, put it all together and make it work. My aim is that in the end there will be a website which functions as a node for everyone involved and a living portal for the students joining in on the project. Email: jagovdakker@gmail.com
