For Australian Students
Who is eligible to apply from Australian universities?

BA students intending to major in Globalisation, International Relations or a European language are particularly encouraged to apply.
When do Australian students have a placement overseas?
Show/hide the answer
In the second semester of the Australian academic year. This roughly corresponds to the first semester of the European academic year, which is called the autumn semester in Europe. The dates vary according to each university but in general the autumn semester in Europe starts in September and finishes in January or February. This means that Australian students will have a gap between the end of their semester 1 studies in Australia and the commencement of their semester studies in Europe.
However many 2008 Australian students will participate in the 2008 Malmö summer school which will run from mid July to early August. Following that students may also undertake an intensive language course run by the university prior to the commencement of their semester of study. As well, Australian students may also take advantage of this time to do some sight-seeing!
I understand that in addition to a semester of study in Europe I attend a summer school at Malmö University or a winter school at Utrecht University. How does this work?
Show/hide the answer
Each Australian student gets to attend two European universities. So you can choose between a short intensive school at Malmö or Utrecht in addition to your semester of study. It’s up to you to nominate which one, so long as you experience study at two European universities.
To give you an example, information about the Malmö summer school held from 20 July - 4 August 2007 “Europe: Changing borders, patterns of migration and identities” is available at www.mah.se/summerschool2007.
Australian students studying in Europe in 2007 who nominated the Utrecht winter school will attend Utrecht University from 30 January to 3 February 2008. The intensive school’s theme is “Global Citizenship in a European Context”.
European students will also participate in these programs providing a great opportunity to experience global citizenship in action.

In addition, Macquarie, La Trobe and Flinders universities offer in total approximately 30 internally funded scholarships in 2007 and in 2008. These vary at each university according to the internal rates of assistance for students studying overseas. Although not worth as much money as the DEST funded scholarships, they also offer scholarship winners the means to be part of the EU-AU Global Citizenship program.
If I am Australian student going on an EU-AU placement in 2008, can I attend the 2008 summer school in Adelaide prior to going on the European placement?
Show/hide the answer
Yes, in fact we recommend that you attend. However if you decide to, Australian students need to pay your own travel and costs for the Australian summer school (this is an optional part of the program), so start saving now!
The Australian students who attended the 2007 summer found that it was a great way to get to meet European students, who in turn offered introductions to their friends at the European university where the Australians were going to study. But attendance is not a requirement for Australian students so it’s up to you.

For
European Students
I understand that European students are funded to study at Macquarie, La Trobe and Flinders universities as part of the program. How does this work?
Show/hide the answer
The Global Citizenship program enables European students to learn about Australia and the Asia-Pacific region by studying here and living in Australia. They too experience study in an overseas university and learn about transnational issues from the perspectives of another part of the world.
Each year in 2007 and 2008, roughly 28 undergraduate students in total from the four participating European universities will participate in an Australian summer school and then study for a semester at Macquarie, La Trobe or Flinders University.
European and Australian students who participate in the EU-AU Global Citizenship program are encouraged to get to know one another. Before you even finish your undergraduate degree, you could become part of an international collegial network of like-minded and challenging people who all share an interest in becoming better international citizens.
When do the European students study in Australia?
Show/hide the answer
They study in the first semester of the Australian academic year. They also attend a summer school in the February before the semester starts. In 2007 the summer school was held in Sydney, run by Macquarie University. In 2008 the summer school will be held in February in Adelaide, run by Flinders University.
